Kinman Fatmaster Pickup Set
Written by Nyk on 29th Aug 2020

They’re expensive, I paid $419 in July 2020, but they’re well designed and have zero-hum day and great tone as claimed. With no prior experience apart from a five minute soldering lesson from a friend, I was able to install these in my lefty MIJ Jazzmaster. Kinman pickups fit perfectly inside the MIJ Jazzmaster cavity and come with rubber feet to raise them to just the right height. The wire ends came stripped and tinned ready to solder. They included a couple of other wires that I didn’t need, but we’re perhaps for common Jazzmaster wiring mods. The Kinman pickup set I got had magnets spaced 50mm and 47.5mm, and adjusted for a 7.25” radius fretboard. They don’t fit in the Japanese pickup covers. The poles are exactly the right spacing to line up with the strings if you have a Mastery Bridge installed (which I installed at the same time). The Fatmasters are much louder than the stock Japanese pickups. For me that meant reducing the drive settings on my rig to get my clean tones back. I’m impressed by how “zero-hum” they are with even high gain settings. They still have plenty of single-coil attack. The tone is fatter in terms of frequency response, but not far in terms of compressed dynamics like some other noiseless Jazzmaster pickups out there (from what I can tell by listening to soundclips). I’m not against that sound, but I feel like that’s a sound I could probably achieve using a compressor when needed, and that these are more true to the original Jazzmaster pickups. The stock MIJ Jazzmaster pickups, which are Strat pickups in disguise, were so bright and thin in comparison that I had been using the rhythm circuit constantly to compensate, but now I don’t need to do that and I can enjoy a broader tonal palette. Very pleased with the sound.
